Design for Your Product Lifetime Article at Core77 with Autodesk
Monday, January 16, 2012 at 8:27PM This winter break I had the honor to redesign one of my previous class projects with Core77 for their Design for Your Product Lifetime series in partnership with Autodesk. I was asked to go through Autodesk's online Sustainability Workshop, and using what I learned redesign one of my student projects. The project I decided to redesign was a modular outdoor tool set that I designed in my Junior year for the International Housewares Competition. For the redesign I focused on increasing strength while decreasing the parts and materials.

The first time I went through the project it was fun to think of mechanisms that were needed for the features that I wanted, but it got overly complex, fragile and impossible to manufacture. This simpler design is a much better solution for the real world, and would be much cheaper to make.
As part of the project I made an animation demonstrating the features of the set. Be sure to watch it in HD so you can read the text. To see the full article on Core77 follow this link.
